Name: Sarah Elzinga
From: Grand Rapids, Michigan
Degrees and institute where received: B.S. in equine science from St. Mary of the Woods College, Indiana;
M.S. in animal science with a focus on equine nutrition from Michigan State University

Sarah Elzinga came to the University of Kentucky (UK) Gluck Equine Research Center to pursue her doctoral degree under Amanda Adams, PhD, an assistant research professor at the Gluck Center. Her research program combines the study of immunology, inflammation, and endocrinology with Elzinga’s existing nutrition background from her master’s degree.

For her doctoral program, Elzinga’s research project aims to gain further understanding of the metabolic and inflammatory factors associated with horses with metabolic dysfunction.

“The research allows for a better understanding of the mechanisms that may predispose the animal to the development of laminitis,” Elzinga said
