Vaccinating Horses Against West Nile Virus: It’s Not Too Late

The Equine Disease Communication Center reports 152 confirmed cases of WNV thus far in 2018, most of which occurred in unvaccinated horses or those with unknown vaccination histories.

Although fall is underway, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is reminding owners that it’s not too late if they’re considering vaccinating horses against West Nile virus (WNV) or boostering existing vaccines.

The Equine Disease Communication Center reports 152 confirmed cases of WNV thus far in 2018, with almost all diagnosed during the months of August and September. Most confirmed cases occurred in horses which were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination history.

In geographic areas with continued warm weather and mosquito activity, horse owners are encouraged to talk to their equine veterinarian today about WNV protection
