Five More Michigan Horses Test Positive for EEE

Five more Michigan horses have been confirmed positive for Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE): one each in Isabella, Mecosta, and Clare counties, and two in Montcalm County. These cases bring the state’s total number of equine EEE cases this year to 18.

On Aug. 25, an unvaccinated Isabella County horse presented with clinical signs that included fever and stumbling, progressing to recumbency (down and unable to rise). The 18-year-old Belgian mare was euthanized.

On Aug. 26, an unvaccinated 4-year-old Belgian mare in Mecosta County presented with ataxia (loss of muscular control) and lethargy, progressing to recumbency. She was confirmed positive on Sept. 4 and was euthanized.

In Montcalm County, a 20-year-old unvaccinated Shetland pony mare showed neurologic signs on Aug. 27, was confirmed positive on Sept. 4, and was euthanized. On Aug. 29, an unvaccinated yearling Standardbred filly also showed neurologic signs. She was also confirmed on Sept. 4 and euthanized
