Veterinarians prescribe antimicrobials to eliminate harmful bacteria that might cause illness or complicate wound healing in horses. However, antimicrobial resistance can develop in equid populations if people use these medications inappropriately, making it more challenging to treat infections in horses in the future. Using antimicrobials safely and only as directed by your veterinarian can help protect your horse from future complications due to resistant bacteria.

To help horse owners better understand equine antimicrobial use, TheHorse.com has partnered with W.F. Young for Equine Antimicrobial Awareness Week, starting Nov. 18, 2024.

Look for antimicrobial content all week on TheHorse.com, our Facebook page, and in our newsletters.
