Healthy Horses

Equine veterinarians are the most qualified resource for horse health information. When looking for information or events that will help your efforts to keep your horse healthy, it is important to consider the qualifications of the source or event. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and many veterinary colleges coordinate seminars that feature equine veterinarians in an effort to advance the care and performance of the horse. Seminars offer a unique opportunity to receive valuable information about how to best care for your horse while also allowing you to talk personally with experts in the field.
The AAEP is committed to providing exceptional education to horse owners, just as it does for its veterinary members. To ensure that the most recent advances in equine health care are shared with horse owners, the AAEP’s Healthy Horses Workshop features leading veterinary experts from across the country discussing the newest information in horse health.
This year the AAEP will host its annual Healthy Horses Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 2, in San Antonio, Texas. Held in conjunction with the association’s annual veterinary convention, the workshop will feature six seminars and demonstrations designed specifically for horse owners and enthusiasts.
Topics and speakers for this year’s event include:
- Colic: What it Means to You & Your Horse David Freeman, MVB, MRCVS, PhD, Gainesville, Fla.
- Equine Reproduction: From Conception to Birth Ben Espy, DVM, San Antonio, Texas.
- Joint Disease & Lameness in the Horse: Why Does it Happen & What can be Done About It? James Casey, DVM, MS, Laurel, Md.
- Managing the Health & Well-Being of Your Aging or Geriatric Horse Nancy Loving, DVM, Boulder, Colo.
- First Aid Tips for the Horse Owner (live horse demonstration) Mark Fitch, DVM, Boulder, Colo.
- The Problem Horse (live horse demonstration) Fitch with John Lyons of Parachute, Colo.
Duncan Peters, DVM, MS, of Lexington, Ky., will moderate the morning session.
New to the Healthy Horses Workshop is an afternoon live horse demonstrations titled “The Problem Horse” featuring Fitch and world-renowned trainer John Lyons (who is sponsored by Nutrena). Attendees will learn hands-on techniques to help the problem horse through various situations such as loading, handling the feet, saddling, and more.
One final point for horse owners–beginners and experienced–to remember is that the horse is a living being whose life and welfare are in your hands. We encourage you to join us and fellow horse owners on Saturday, Dec. 2, to discover more about how you can better help your horse’s life become more healthy and happy.
The AAEP’s mission is to improve the health and welfare of the horse, to further the professional development of its members, and to provide resources and leadership for the benefit of the equine industry.
