Veterinarians believe they have controlled an outbreak of a highly contagious equine virus responsible for the deaths of six horses.

The latest horse to get seriously ill was euthanatized Friday and two more are being monitored for signs of the illness, state agriculture officials said.

“This is not alarming to us because this death is within the quarantined facilities,” said Mark Fagan, a spokesman with the Florida Department of Agriculture. “We’re still encouraged that there are no new (cases) outside the quarantined areas.”

Seven stables in Wellington are under quarantine. State officials also quarantined stables in Ocala, Indiantown, and Jupiter Farms
