The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA) has appointed Lafe Nichols, DVM, of Henderson, Ky., as Kentucky’s chief racing veterinarian. The chief veterinarian oversees a staff that ensures all racing in Kentucky complies with equine medical regulations.

Nichols established the Veterinary Medical Center of Henderson in 1985, which supports local Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and Quarter Horse racetracks, training centers, and broodmare farms. He has worked for the KHRA during special events, including the Kentucky Derby.

Nichols earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Purdue University in 1981.

Dr. Nancy Davis, who has held the position of state veterinarian for the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority for more than 30 years, will retire April 27.


“Nobody has been more dedicated to ensuring the safest possible racing conditions for horses than has Dr. Davis,” said Lisa Underwood, executive director of the KHRA. “We will miss her and wish her a long, rewarding retirement.”


The KHRA is an indeendent agency of the state government charged with the responsibility of regulating the conduct of horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing and related activities within the commonwealth
