Facility managers who are handling a neurologic equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) or “rhino” incident at a Columbia, Md. horse stable reported May 7 that one additional horse had to be euthanized. The horse had exhibited a low-grade fever and was responding well to treatment until late last night when he developed neurologic signs. Private veterinarians, Maryland state animal health officials, and farm operators are monitoring the situation closely.
There remains no reason to believe that the virus has moved off of the farm and all preventative measures remain in place including a Maryland Department of Agriculture “hold order” prohibiting horses from moving on or off of the farm.
