Three men who have dedicated their lives to the industry of horseshoeing have been named to the International Horseshoeing Hall Of Fame.

Members of the Class of 2002 include: Seamus Brady of Bridgewater, N.J., Henry Heymering of Frederick, Md. and Lester Hollenback of Deltona, Fla. The three honorees were nominated by fellow farriers, trainers, owners, friends, veterinarians and family members. Past Hall Of Fame inductees served as the board of electors. The International Horseshoeing Hall Of Fame is jointly sponsored by American Farriers Journal and the Kentucky Derby Museum. With three additions this year, the Hall’s total membership stands at 78.

  • Seamus Brady started his career at the ripe old age of 10 when he became a part of the Irish Equestrian Team. At the invitation of the United States Equestrian Team, Brady ended up bringing his skills to the U.S. He eventually became an official farrier of the U.S. Olympic Team.

  • Henry Heymering, who studied at Bud Beaston’s Oklahoma Farriers College, wanted to create a forum where farriers could exchange ideas and philosophies. In 1975, Heymering founded the  American Farriers Journal. He sold the operation by 1980 but continued his pursuit of keeping farriers well informed by completing an extensive historical bibliography of all horseshoeing books throughout the years, which is entitled On The Horseâs Foot. He also was one of the earlier members of the American Farriers Association.

  • Lester Hollenback started his career by shoeing mules while serving in the United States army in India during World War II. He returned to the U.S. in 1947 and by 1965 he founded the Midwest Farrier School in Macomb, Ill. Eventually, he sold the school but moved on to shoe horses at the Ben White Raceway in Orlando. There, he shod some for some of the best Standardbred trainers in the world.

American Farriers Journal also is accepting nominations of equine veterinarians for the International Equine Veterinarians Hall Of Fame. Nominations can be made for either practicing equine vets who work closely with farriers or industry equine vets involved in teaching, research or other important aspects of hoof care. To nominate veterinarians for the Class of 2002 or farriers for the 2003 International Horseshoeing Hall Of Fame, send your nominee’s name, address, background and biographical information, including relevant stories or notes, to American Farriers Journal, Attn. Hall Of Fame, P.O. Box 624, Brookfield, WI 53008-0624. Fax information to 262/782-1252 or e-mail it  to info@lesspub.com. The deadline for equine vet nominations is Feb. 1, 2002. The deadline for farrier nominations is Aug. 30, 2002
