Today begins a new excerpt from the book Equine ER from Chapter 13: Surely Awesome. Plus: Happy Birthday to us! This blog began roughly a year ago. In other news, Equine ER is going into a second printing less than five months since its release! We’re very excited and thank all of you who have supported the book and this blog, as well as the hard-working team at Eclipse Press, the staff of The Horse, and everyone involved at Blood-Horse Publications. Surely Awesome
As Big Brown sped down the stretch to win the 2008 Kentucky Derby with Kent Desormeaux astride him, the two were one. (A good jockey, it is said, is “part horse” anyway.) After they won the Preakness by five and a half lengths, Desormeaux told a reporter, “I’ve been blessed with this freak of a horse.”
As the Belmont approached, trainer Rick Dutrow assured everyone his horse would be the first to win the Triple Crown in three decades. But Big Brown didn’t win. He faltered around the second turn, with Desormeaux easing him up. He came in last. Whether it was a shoe that wasn’t secure, a hoof with an unhealed crack, exhaustion, or something else, nobody will ever know. That’s the thing about a horse, and not just a Thoroughbred. Not one is a safe bet, for your money or your heart
