Thoroughbred Training Center

The Thoroughbred Training Center off Paris Pike might be one of Lexington’s best-kept secrets. Its (almost) daily tours are also one of the best ways to get up close and personal with these incredible athletes in training. Below is an excerpt about the Center from Patti Nickell’s Horse Lover’s Guide to Kentucky:
“If you are looking for a real “behind-the-scenes” tour that will show you Thoroughbreds at work and at rest, look no further than the Thoroughbred Training Center. Located in the midst of lush horse farms on Paris Pike, the center, owned by the Keeneland Association, encompasses 240 acres of rolling Bluegrass terrain and generally stables anywhere from 900 to 1,000 horses.
The training center provides the perfect venue for the novice horse lover to see up close and personal all the attention and hard work that go into taking an untested horse and making him/her into a champion. On guided tours that last from an hour to an hour-and-a-half, visitors have a chance to see horses during their morning workouts on one of the center’s two tracks, observe top-notch trainers as they work with potential future champions, and tour the barns and paddocks where the horses spend their “off-duty” time.”

Fun Fact: Have you ever heard of a moonbow? The nighttime phenomenon is unique to just a couple places in the world: Victoria Falls and Corbin, Kentucky’s own Cumberland Falls. Check out the yearly moonbow dates (during each full moon) to catch one yourself. Also, if you’re visiting the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, they have stables that lead guided trail rides through Eastern Kentucky’s forests. And surrounding areas permit the use of personal horses. See the Web site for more information. TheHorse.com is home to thousands of free articles about horse health care.
