Parasite Treatment in Horses
 
 
Parasite infections in horses can pose a serious threat to a horse’s health. As part of a complete parasite management strategy, a veterinarian-designed deworming program which includes the two products, QUEST¨ (moxidectin) and QUEST¨ PLUS (moxidectin/praziquantel), from Pfizer Animal Health, helps provide protection against these health problems.

                The environment that the horse is exposed to every day is a common source of parasites. Even with no outward signs, migrating parasites can damage vital organs and rob the horse of its health. Parasites in horses can decrease nutrient absorption; can lead to colic or pneumonia; potentially cause irreversible lung damage; impair performance; stunt growth; cause weight loss; and impair coat condition 4. 
Veterinarians can devise effective and complete parasite management programs to help horse owners prevent the health problems associated with parasitism. By including QUEST or QUEST PLUS when appropriate in the program, the horse will be protected from parasitic threats such as large strongyles, small strongyles, roundworms, pinworms, hairworms, stomach worms, bots and encysted small strongyles. QUEST PLUS also provides treatment of tapeworms.

                 Of all equine parasites, pathologists consider small strongyles to be of major significance2. The small strongyle life cycle can include an encysted larval stage many dewormers are not effective against.  The unique moxidectin ingredient in QUEST and QUEST PLUS controls encysted small strongyles and the egg-producing adult small strongyles, thus breaking the pattern of infestation by interrupting the parasites’ life cycle. One effective dose knocks out a broad spectrum of parasites and suppresses production of small strongyle eggs for up to 84 days – reducing fecal egg shedding and further contamination of pastures where horses graze.

QUEST and QUEST PLUS provide an effective period of protection against parasite re-infection for up to 84 days.3  The products also offer an additional convenience benefit since they are specially formulated as palatable, clear gels that dissolve quickly for an easier deworming process
