The Kentucky State Veterinarian’s office has announced that two more horses have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). These are the seventh and eighth equine WNV case confirmed in the commonwealth this year.
In a statement Kentucky Equine Programs manager E.S. "Rusty" Ford said both cases were confirmed Sept 13.
The first horse—a 7-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse gelding from Adair County—presented on Sept. 10 with ataxia (incoordination), then an inability to rise. As of Sept. 13, the attending veterinarian reported the horse was “alive and showing some improvement, though still seriously ill.” The horse has no WNV vaccination history.
The second horse—a 13-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse mare from Russell County—presented on Aug. 31 with mild ataxia. As of Sept. 13, the mare was reported to be in stable condition and showing daily improvement. She has no WNV vaccination history
