In consultation with Aliza Simeone, VMD, Pennsylvania’s regional state veterinarian, the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square, will begin to admit a limited number of outpatient and elective patients whose management can be readily restricted to nonquarantined areas within the hospital.

The New Bolton Center was placed under a self-imposed quarantine after a horse there tested positive for equine herpes myeloencephalitis (EHM) last week.

New Bolton Center staff continue to uphold rigorous biosecurity measures which will determine the number of patients admitted. In an effort to best serve clients, New Bolton Center will begin offering specialized services that are difficult to find elsewhere. The hospital will continue to receive equine and camelid emergencies. All cow, sheep, goat, and pig patients will be admitted and discharged routinely. The field service and reproductive services at the Hofmann Center remain fully operational.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has completed their tracing for all horses present in the two affected barns at New Bolton Center during the identified risk period. In Pennsylvania, orders of special quarantine have been posted at premises in Berks, Chester, Dauphin, and York Counties. While New Bolton Center is strictly following the regulatory requirements pertinent to Pennsylvania, actions and determinations in neighboring states are at the complete discretion of the regulatory veterinarian in those states (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia) At this time, other than the index case, there are no additional neurologic horses detected on the quarantined farms in the counties listed above, nor in neighboring states, or at New Bolton Center
