Maryland Woman Charged in Horse Seizure Case

A Maryland woman has been indicted on multiple animal cruelty counts in connection with the removal of more than 90 horses from her Wicomico County property.
In March, Wicomico County Sheriff’s Department personnel responded to a call about horse remains on a property near Quantico, Maryland. Investigators discovered the carcasses of 25 allegedly malnourished horses in various stages of decomposition. They also found another 98 Quarter Horse and Appaloosas on the property, including several stallions, pregnant mares, and foals.
Authorities relocated all the live horses to various rescues. Their owner later surrendered the animals, said James L. Dykes, interim state’s attorney for Wicomico County.
On May 21, the Wicomico County Grand Jury indicted Barbara Pilchard on 16 felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and 48 misdemeanor counts of animal abuse and neglect. On June 8, she appeared in Wicomico County Circuit Court in connection with the charges
