The Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health program is strongly encouraging all horse owners to ensure their equids are vaccinated against West Nile virus (WNV) and other mosquito-borne diseases.
This reminder comes after three unvaccinated Maryland horses tested positive for WNV in August. Two of those—from Anne Arundel and Washington counties—are responding to treatment and expected to recover. The third horse from Carroll County showed severe neurologic signs and was euthanized.
Mosquito populations have increased significantly this year due to sustained wet weather, which has led to an increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE)
