Florida animal health officials have reported Polk County’s first case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in a horse for 2019. There have now been nine confirmed cases of EEE in Florida horses this year, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Reportable Equine Disease Map.

The affected undervaccinated 8-year-old Quarter Horse stallion developed clinical signs on April 24, the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported May 6. The horse was euthanized due to a poor prognosis, and the positive test result was returned on May 6, the EDCC said.
