On Oct. 4, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) officials reported another equine case of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) and another horse with West Nile virus (WNV).

On Sept. 23, the latest horse with EEE, an unvaccinated yearling Belgian mare in St. Joseph County, began showing clinical signs, including muscle twitching and leaning against objects. She was confirmed positive on Oct. 1 and is reported as recovering.

The horse that tested positive for WNV, an unvaccinated 2-year-old Standardbred mare in Lapeer County, first showed clinical signs of fever, paddling, and recumbency (down and unable to rise) on Sept. 30. She was euthanized and confirmed positive on Oct. 4
