The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) reported on Oct. 5 that an aged gelding residing at Skye Acres Equestrian Center in East Patchogue, Suffolk County, New York, tested positive Oct. 4 for equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM).

According to a NYSDAM statement, the gelding first displayed signs of EHM on Oct. 3. The attending veterinarian examined the gelding, took diagnostic samples, and began supportive treatment.

“A veterinarian noted +3 ataxia (incoordination) in the hind limbs and urine dribbling but did not detect fever,” said a Woods End Equine Veterinary Services Facebook post. “On Friday evening, the case was confirmed based on PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing.”

Other horses on the premises have been quarantined, and barn management instituted immediate biosecurity measures. NYSDAM will continue to monitor the situation
