Arizona authorities have arrested a woman listed as the Miniature Horse Association of Arizona’s (MHAA) vice president on multiple animal cruelty counts in Maricopa County.

Lieutenant Brandon Jones, public information officer for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), said that in January department personnel responded to a call about several allegedly maltreated animals residing on a property owned by Andrea Mikkel.

Acting on a warrant, deputies discovered several animals allegedly residing in filth inside Mikkel’s home, he said. A group of Miniature Horses, full-sized horses, zebras, and other exotic animals resided outside the home, Jones said. Deputies subsequently seized four horses (including two Miniature Horses), along with birds, cats, dogs, and other animals, Jones said. Authorities left the zebras and other exotic animals on the property, he said.

On Feb. 19, the MCSO arrested Mikkel, charged her with 80 counts of animal cruelty, and booked her into jail, said MCSO Officer Christopher Hegstrom
