Officials with the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show are awaiting equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) test results on a horse euthanized at the competition on Sept. 18.

“During the State 4-H Horse Show on Friday, a horse exhibited neurological symptoms,” a Sept. 18 email from show officials to competitors read. “The State 4-H Horse Show veterinarian treated the horse. Because of the horse’s worsening condition and poor prognosis, the family chose to euthanize the horse.

“Based on the symptoms, there is a possibility that the horse may have had EHV-1. This is one of several possible diagnoses. The horse is being tested through the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. We expect to receive results next week.”

Officials said the affected horse was stalled at the north side of the cattle barn, and the immediate area has been disinfected. The horse, who was from Clay County, did not participate in any classes; however, other Clay County horses participated in the following classes: Grade 9, 10, and 12 in poles; Grade 9, 10, and 12 in jumping figure-8; and Training Step 2
