South Africa’s Independent Online reports that Christopher Puller has been suspended from riding for two months because he didn’t pull up and get off his mount when it broke its leg on Sept. 23.


“The horse, Dancecusdance, whose injured leg was ‘dangling,’ was put down by a vet who shot it in front of the grandstand at the Kenilworth racecourse,” reported the article. Someone made an inquiry into the incident the day of the race.


The breakdown occurred at “about the 600-meter mark,” the article reported. Puller was charged with failure to pull up and dismount, and he continued to trot the horse to the 50-meter mark. The veterinarian ordered the rider to dismount before shooting the horse to put it down.


“The Western Cape Stipendiary Board’s report of October 3 said Puller pleaded guilty to the charge,” said the article, and he received a penalty of two months’ suspension from riding. He has seven days to appeal
