The American College of Theriogenologists (ACT) recently honored Dickson Varner, DVM, Dipl. ACT, of Texas A&M University, as the 2002 Theriogenologist of the Year. The award is given annually to recognize outstanding achievement in the field of animal reproduction research.


Varner is world-renowned for his expertise in stallion reproduction, and he has made major contributions to the field of theriogenology in research, teaching, and service activities during his career. He is the head of the theriogenology section at Texas A&M, where he gives lectures, teaches laboratories, and conducts clinical instruction for students. Varner also regularly presents research papers at scientific meetings and is a popular speaker on stallion reproduction at veterinary conferences.  Varner often travels the world evaluating and treating fertility problems in stallions.


He has served as the Examination Committee chair, secretary, and president of the ACT in the past. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for The Horse.


As the recipient of the award, Varner receives international and national recognition for endeavors in his field, a plaque, and a monetary honorarium. The award is funded by the Monsanto Corporation
