A Georgia man is facing multiple animal cruelty charges after 16 allegedly malnourished horses were removed from and the remains of several other horses were found on his Peach County property.

Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese said personnel from his department responded to complaints about dead horses on a Fort Valley property owned by Vernon Crouch in February. Sheriff's personnel discovered the remains of more than 12 horses on that property and a property nearby. On Feb. 28 under a court order, sheriff's department personnel removed 16 horses and a donkey from Crouch's property. All the animals were allegedly malnourished, Deese said.

Crouch was subsequently charged with 16 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, Deese said, and remains in custody pending a bond hearing.
