Prized, winner of the 1989 Breeders' Cup Turf and sire of grade I winner Brass Hat, was euthanized at age 28 July 13 at Old Friends retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, due to infirmities of old age.

The son of Kris S. had been receiving care from Bryan Waldridge, DVM, MS, Dipl. ABVP, ACVIM, because of deteriorating mobility.

"We brought Prized up every afternoon from his paddock for a cool shower, extra carrots and the adulation of his fans," said Michael Blowen of Old Friends. "He loved it. It's always very, very sad when we lose a retiree, especially one as accomplished and adored as Prized."

Bred in Florida by Meadowbrook Farm, which campaigned him along with Clover Racing Stables and trainer Neil Drysdale, Prized won stakes on both the dirt and turf and amassed career earnings of $2,262,555. He posted a 9-2-3 record from 17 career starts that include his victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf, his first start on grass, at Gulfstream Park and 1990 San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita Park
