An Assateague pony struck by a vehicle on Aug. 6 was euthanized Aug. 15, officials from the National Park Services’ Assateague Island National Seashore have confirmed.

The 2-year-old stallion (N2BHS-AO, “Adriana’s Yankee Prince”) was reported down in the saltmarsh and unable to stand early on Aug. 15.

This loss brings the Maryland herd’s population to 78 horses, including 20 stallions and 58 mares. After the July census officials said two additional horses— N9BFQ (“Braidwood”) and M6L (“Dani”)—are missing/presumed dead. The one mare known to be pregnant in 2018 foaled in April. No other mares are known to be pregnant at this time
