The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) announced Aug. 15 that a pony from Northern Virginia has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This is the first equine case of WNV in Virginia this year.

A 9-year-old pony mare from Fauquier County tested positive for WNV at VDACS’ regional animal health laboratory in Warrenton and the USDA lab in Iowa. The mare exhibited loss of body movement control, partial hind-limb paralysis, a dazed appearance, and an inability to stand. The pony was not vaccinated against WNV but has recovered.

Joe Garvin, DVM, head of VDACS’ Office of Laboratory Services, urged horse owners to check with their veterinarians about vaccinating animals against WNV
