California Horse Diagnosed With West Nile Virus

On Sept. 6, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) confirmed that a Merced County horse tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The unvaccinated 3-year-old stallion developed clinical signs of ataxia (incoordination), drooping lip, and muscle fasciculations (twitching) on Aug. 25 and is reported to be recovering.

WNV transmission occurs when infected mosquitoes feed on animals, as well as humans, after having fed on infected birds
