California Horse Tests Positive for Equine Herpesvirus-1

On March 26, officials at the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) confirmed an 18-year-old Quarter Horse gelding from Alameda County with equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The gelding, which had been vaccinated, presented with fever on March 25. He is reported as affected and alive with no neurologic signs. He remains isolated with enhanced biosecurity measures in place while CDFA continues to monitor the outbreak.
This is the second horse confirmed with EHV-1 at this premises, where 44 exposed horses have been quarantined since March 16 due to a 14-year-old pony mare being confirmed with the neurologic form of EHV-1.
