The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office, was scheduled to begin gathering wild horses from the Humboldt herd area (HA) the week of Jan. 26.

The gather site is located in Pershing County, approximately 10 miles northeast of Lovelock, Nevada, and will last approximately three days. The BLM will gather and remove approximately 200 wild horses from the range.

“Wild horses have moved into the Humboldt HA from neighboring herd management areas in search of forage, water, and space,” said Humboldt River Field Manager Jim Schroeder. “Due to the checkerboard land pattern found within the Humboldt HA, it is not currently managed for wild horses or burros. This gather will zero out the existing population of excess wild horses.”

The gather area is comprised of 431,544 acres of both private and public lands. Removing the excess wild horses will help prevent further deterioration of the range and water resources, as well as address safety issues on roads and private land issues, the BLM said
