The Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine has confirmed that a single horse has been diagnosed with the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).

Confirmation came late on Aug. 19 and the horse has been in isolation in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Pullman, Washington, since its arrival on Aug. 18. The horse was euthanized and its stall and surroundings have undergone terminal cleaning.

The affected horse was an 18-year-old Quarter Horse mare from Newport, Washington, that, until she developed signs of disease, had been competing in rodeo events in the inland Pacific Northwest.

As required by law, WSU veterinarians have contacted the Washington Assistant State Veterinarian, Scott Haskell. His office and the Washington State Department of Agriculture will respond to the situation statewide
