Mosquito-Borne Diseases Found in Florida, Kentucky Horses
Animal health officials in Florida and Kentucky have reported additional confirmed cases of potentially deadly mosquito-borne diseases in horses in those states.
Florida
On Oct. 9 the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) confirmed a case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in a Levy County horse on Sept. 20. The horse developed signs of disease on Sept. 19, and the animal’s vaccination history is unknow.
Additionally, the FDACS also confirmed a case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Collier County horse on Sept. 30. The EDCC said Collier County Animal Services recovered the horse after Hurricane Irma and became clinical on Sept. 22. The animal’s vaccination history is unknown.
Kentucky
Meanwhile, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture also reported a new confirmed WNV case in a Garrad County horse, the EDCC reported Oct. 9. The adult Tennessee Walking Horse cross with no WNV vaccination history began showing signs of disease on Sept. 30, the EDCC said. The horse went down with proprioceptive deficits and was euthanized. This is the 14th confirmed case of equine WNV reported in Kentucky in 2017
