I follow Dr. Kellon’s Equine Cushings and Insulin Resistance Group recommendations of no pasture, dry lot turn out, soaked hay with appropriate supplementation and feeds under 10% ESC & starch combined with annual Insulin, Glucose and ACTH testing for my IR & PPID TN Walker.
Drylot turnout instead of grass pasture with good quality grass hay and instead of grain, feeding a ration balancer.
In addition to the above, their entire diet is kept below 10% NSC. Their pasture turnout is carefully monitored, and their hay is all Orchard Grass. Have had horses with Metabolic issues in the past, and don’t want any again!
All of the above plus mineral balancing, use of a paddock paradise track system as part of the exercise program and muzzling to prevent excess intake.
