IHRC Moves Equine Drug Testing to Industrial Laboratories

The transition comes after the commission’s primary laboratory reportedly failed to report three drug tests.

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC) has terminated its contract with Truesdail Laboratory, in Tustin, California, its primary laboratory, after the lab reportedly failed to report positive findings in three samples that contained drugs in violation of Indiana’s medication rules, the commission announced May 13.

The drugs—isoflupredone and betamethasone, both corticosteroids—were detected by the commission’s audit laboratory, Industrial Laboratories, in Denver, Colorado, and confirmed by referee laboratory LGC Science, in Lexington, Kentucky. The concentrations of the drugs found were approximately two to five times the thresholds established by Indiana’s medication rule, which is the same threshold as the Association of Racing Commissioners International model rule.

Effective immediately, all testing of equine samples will be performed by Industrial Laboratories, its new primary laboratory, the commission said.

“The commission established its quality assurance program for just this reason—to double-check the proficiency of its primary laboratory,” said Joe Gorajec, IHRC executive director. “The program worked well and we are now able to improve our drug testing moving forward
