Thoroughbred Event at Saratoga Showcases Retired Racehorses

One highlight of Thoroughbreds For All Saratoga, taking place Aug. 4 at Traylor Farm in Ballston Springs, New York, will be Rosie Napravnik back in the saddle after retiring as the most successful female jockey in history last fall.
With her newborn son Carson in tow, Rosie will be riding a racehorse, but not in a race. The horse is aptly named Dare Me, and the challenge is to prepare him for the $100,000 Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) Thoroughbred Makeover by the third weekend of October. Dare Me is owned by the Makers Mark Secretariat Center and was bred and raced by Louise and Leonard Riggio.
“Talk about pressure,” said Napravnik. “I have until October to prepare for a dressage test and a cross-country course on a racehorse I’ve never sat on. The good news is that he is perfectly suited for it.”
The Thoroughbred Makeover and tomorrow’s event in Saratoga are designed to show the talent and trainability of Thoroughbred racehorses when they pursue second careers. “Racing fans don’t often see just how kind and intelligent these animals are off the track,” said Suzanne Carreker-Voigt, one of a group of local horse owners behind Tuesday’s event. “It is a story that must be told
