The hyperbaric oxygen chamber at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, in Lexington, Ky., is back in operation after being shut down for evaluation following an accident involving a similar piece of equipment in Florida.

According to a statement posted Feb. 27 on Hagyard’s Facebook page, "additional features" have been installed in the chamber and a thorough review of procedures was conducted to enhance "our stringent safety protocols." The first horse treated in the chamber after the safety review was a foal that had severely damaged the nerves in his chest and forearm while playing in a paddock, the statement said.

One employee and a horse were killed Feb. 10 at Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (KESMARC) Florida, located near Ocala, when a hyperbaric chamber exploded. In addition, another employee was injured. Hagyard announced the shutdown of its chamber for a safety review Feb. 13 on Facebook.
