Wisconsin Town ‘Horsing Around’ For Therapeutic Riding

In the spirit of Chicago’s “Cows on Parade” and Cincinnati’s “Big Pig Gig,” a herd of masterfully painted ponies will adorn the streets of Lake Geneva, Wisc., this summer as Special Methods in Learning Equine Skills Inc. (SMILES) mounts a public art exhibition featuring life-size fiberglass colts transformed into works of art by area artisans.
Lake Geneva’s most extensive outdoor art experience to date, “Horsing Around Town” features 80 sculptures situated throughout the downtown area, along the waterfront and grazing at area retailers and lodging establishments. According to SMILES officials, the artists had three months to work on their creations prior to trotting out the distinctive steeds for the June through September exhibition.

Based in Darien, Wisc., SMILES serves as a therapeutic riding center for adults and children with disabilities. The center serves upwards of 400 individuals per year with the majority of participants residing in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
The painted ponies will be auctioned at a special event at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa Oct. 4.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the reaction of visitors as they encounter these whimsical ponies while strolling through the Lake Geneva area this summer,” said George F. Hennerley, executive vice president of the Lake Geneva Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
A complimentary map including the location of each horse and artist information will be available at downtown retailers and at the Lake Geneva Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, 201 Wrigley Drive, in late June.
The Lake Geneva area is located less than 90 minutes from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and 45 minutes from General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.
