An Associated Press article from Friday, Dec. 12, stated that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) employees have begun removing 1,480 horses from Battle Mountain rangelands in Nevada, and the federal group in January will remove 450 mustangs from rangelands near Gerlach, Nev.

Extremely limited forage for winter was cited by BLM as the reason for the roundups. The horses will be held at a BLM facility near Reno, Nev., prior to being adopted or heading to long-term holding facilities.

The AP article stated that these two mustang gathers will reduce the number of wild horses roaming open rangelands in “10 Western states to about 31,000. The BLM has set a target appropriate management level of horses at 27,000 in the wild.”

This roundup comes in the wake of the BLM’s announcement it might have to euthanize horses in long-term holding facilities because too much money is being spent each year to hold those unwanted horses
