The Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine will be hosting an informational meeting for horse owners after a second horse was reported to have the respiratory form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).
According to a statement by State Veterinarian Don Hansen, DVM, MPVM, posted on the Oregon State Web site, two Oregon horses and five Washington horses exhibited clinical signs of respiratory EHV-1 after attending the same weekend horse show in Oregon in July.
“This is not the severe neurologic form,” Hansen said. “The garden-variety herpesvirus can cause transient neurologic signs in horses–they can be a little off for 24 hours, and that’s just something we have to deal with. But it’s garden variety–it’s not the horse-killer that we were talking about last year, that we saw in Florida and some other parts of the country.
“As far as I know, all horses have recovered,” Hansen said.
The Oregon State University meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 7:00 p.m., in room 102 of Magruder Hall.
