Caretakers of the horses seized in a recent South Carolina abuse case got some good news last month, when one of the mares delivered a full-term foal.

“She’s just beautiful,” said Kelly Graham, director of public relations for the Richland County, S.C., Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “And she’s completely healthy.”

Born on March 28, the foal is the first in an anticipated baby boom within a herd of 45 horses that were seized by Richland County authorities in February. The horses were removed from property belonging to Hazelene Trexler and her sons James and Terry Trexler.

The foal was born just a day after another member of the herd, a 21-year-old mare named Jabask GDancer, was euthanized due to complications from colic.

Otherwise, all of the horses, which were reported to be malnourished at the time they were seized, are thriving. Privett said the animals’ body condition scores are increasing, and all are adapting well to human contact.

The Trexlers are charged with multiple courts of ill-treatment of animals. Until their case is resolved in court, the horses will continue to reside in approved local foster homes, Privett said.
