A horse died of an apparent heart attack during a race Saturday (Jan. 13) at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, injuring his jockey.


Carlos Marquez Jr. was taken to Tulane Medical Center with shoulder pain after Arbuckle Bandit went down on the backstretch, Lenny Vangilder, a Fair Grounds spokesman said.


The collapse did not affect any other horses or jockeys, he said.


The track’s veterinarian found that the death was from an apparent heart attack, a news release said
