With the majority of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) quarantines lifted in Wellington, Fla., state officials there are close to declaring an end of the outbreak that left six horses dead. Three of the remaining four quarantines could be lifted tomorrow (Jan. 16).

“We have released six of the 10 facilities and expect to be able to get results back probably tomorrow on three more,” said Mark Fagan, a spokesman with the Florida Department of Agriculture. “If we get negative results back from those three, we’ll issue the release from quarantine on the same day, and that’ll just leave one to go.”

Fagan said he expects the state department’s command post in Wellington to be deactivated by the end of the week.
