An alert regarding a case of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) put out by the Dutchess County, N.Y., Cornell Cooperative Extension earlier today (Jan. 23) is being clarified.

While the release stated EHV-1 had been diagnosed, Jessica Chittenden, director of public information for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, said the horse has never shown clinical signs of neurologic herpesvirus and has not been confirmed positive for EHV-1.

“We do not have any confirmed cases of neurologic EHV in New York,” Chittenden said. “The horse was not sick and did not have any neurological symptoms.

“Dutchess County is trying to put out a clarification, they kind of got ahead of themselves,” Chittenden said. “They’re quickly trying to retrace their steps.”
