Lyphard, one of the great sires of recent times and certainly one of the longest living, was euthanatized June 10 at Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Ky.

Pensioned in 1996 at age 27, Lyphard lived to be 36.

“Lyphard has been a part of the Gainesway family for 27 years,” said Antony Beck, the president of Gainesway Farm. “He was a tremendous racehorse and sire; we are saddened by his passing.”

Lyphard, by Northern Dancer, sired 115 stakes winners and is the broodmare sire of 196 stakes winners. He was the leading sire of 1986 with $6 million when his progeny included champion grass horse Manila
