Illness caused by West Nile virus (WNV) infection has been confirmed by the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in equids from 28 states this year as of Sept. 2: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. (Note: the U.S. Geological Survey’s Center for Integration of Natural Disaster Information has reported an equine case from New York).
The total number of equine cases of WNV tested at the NVSL or reported by state officials so far this year is now 2,361. The cases are from 31 states: Alabama (10), Arkansas (36), Colorado (49), Florida (72), Georgia (11), Illinois (62), Indiana (44), Iowa (63), Kansas (55), Kentucky (69), Louisiana (172), Michigan (3), Minnesota (247), Mississippi (114), Missouri (145), Montana (14), Nebraska (367), New Jersey (3), New Mexico (3), New York (3), North Dakota (320), Ohio (14), Oklahoma (13), Pennsylvania (2), South Dakota (302), Tennessee (8), Texas (134), Vermont (1), Virginia (3), Wisconsin (9), and Wyoming (13).
