Since Oct. 1 four horses have been struck by vehicles and killed in the area of Veterans Parkway and Rio Wrangler Parkway in south Reno, Nevada. To address public safety concerns, in the last week the city of Reno has set up four mobile message boards in the area advising motorists to travel 35 miles per hour (MPH).

On Oct. 13, two message boards stating, “Horses in Roadway, Advise 35 MPH,” were placed east of Veterans Parkway on Rio Wrangler and south of Steamboat Parkway on Rio Wrangler. On Oct. 16, two additional message boards were placed on Veterans Parkway, south of Steamboat Parkway and north of Rio Wrangler. One of those areas near Damonte Ranch High School is already designated as a 35 MPH zone, but the other areas are 45 MPH.

“We want people to understand that the advised speed limit of 35 MPH is not considered permanent, but may ultimately be part of the solution to improve public safety, which is our top priority at the city of Reno,” said Ward 2 Reno City Councilmember Naomi Duerr. “We will keep these message boards in place for approximately 30 days while staff evaluates the situation and determines the appropriate next steps.”

The Reno Police Department (RPD) said that, since Aug. 15, it has received 13 calls related to horse/vehicle disturbances, which includes the four horses that have been hit. Most of those occurrences have been on either Veterans or Rio Wrangler, or near their intersection
