How Common is Laminitis in Australian Horses?

Researchers found a similar prevalence of laminitis in Australian horses and ponies as in America and Europe.

Laminitis is a hoof problem horse owners and veterinarians around the world face. But in some countries, it’s not clear just how often it occurs. One of those nations is Australia, and researchers from the University of Melbourne Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences recently set out to change this.

In addition to investigating laminitis incidence southeastern Australia, they aimed to describe and categorize horse owners’ current dietary and management practices.

The team attended 10 Pony Club rallies in several regions of Victoria from October 2012 to September 2013.

“A rally is really a club meet … where members come together for lessons and other group activities,” explained Simon Bailey, BVMS, PhD, FHEA, Dipl.
