The Ontario, Canada, Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) reported that a Quebec horse exhibiting acute neurologic signs has tested positive for equine hepresvirus-1 (EHV-1).

In an Oct. 4 statement, the OMAFRA said it's unclear whether the horse is affected by the neuropathogenic or non-neuropathogenic strain.

"Two horses from (one) farm were briefly stabled for less than 24 hours at the Canadian Interprovincial Equestrian Games in Bromont, Quebec," the statement read. "After returning home, one of these horses, who was not showing any clinical signs, tested positive for EHV-1 by PCR on a nasal swab sample.

"Several horses from Ontario have been competing at this event and are scheduled to return to Ontario," the statement continued. "Although the horses from Ontario were stabled in a separate barn from the Quebec horses, out of an abundance of caution, these horses should be closely monitored after they return home and appropriate biosecurity practices utilized
