The Food and Drug Administration recently announced that it has approved additional label claims for Zimecterin (ivermectin), adding several species and stages of small strongyles to the list of parasites controlled by the equine dewormer. The announcement means that Zimecterin has been proven to control 60 species and stages of equine parasites, 32 of which are in the small strongyle group. Zimecterin is manufactured by Merial, which discovered ivermectin and developed it for use in horses. The expanded label claims will apply to all Merial equine dewormers, including Equimectrin and the veterinary brand Eqvalan (both ivermectin).

The new labels were awarded after the Center for Veterinary Medicine reviewed extensive company research, which identified the previously unlabeled small strongyles that were previously not listed on the label, and confirmed that the products were fully effective at controlling all of the additional species and stages.
