Hurricane Isabel announced her landfall by hammering coastal North Carolina on Sept. 18. Some of the storm’s worst damage was seen in that state. However, due to meticulous disaster planning, most North Carolina horses were out of harm’s way before the storm hit.

Jodi Jackson, executive director of the State Animal Response Team (SART), said, “I’m very pleased to report that the horses in North Carolina did extremely well. We have a (disaster planning) system in place now, which was not in place during Hurricane Floyd.” In 1999, Hurricane Floyd was responsible for widespread damage and animal abandonment and death in North Carolina
